A Special Series of Live Performances in October & November 2011

A big spring hello to you all! :-)

I know it's been a while since I've written, but I can tell you there's been much activity behind the scenes! I have been building up towards a string of live performances in October and November!

It's all very exciting and I really hope you can come along to one of them because I have a few new tunes to show you, and at selected gigs I am performing live with a fabulous 6 piece ensemble, playing drums, bass, keys, violin and harmonica! The music sounds so good with this amazing collective of musicians, I am proud of the sound we're creating and feel blessed to have them there to help share my tunes and lyrics out into the world.

Iam also performing live in Melbourne. I'm also performing at the amazing Heartspace Festival New South Wales in October... In Adelaide I'm presenting a meditation with sound and singing bowls at the Feast Festival Wellbeing Retreat.

There's lots of events to choose from, take your pick!
Hope to see you there :-)

BLIND NELLY

Heather is composer and sound designer for a work in progress theatre production called Blind Nelly. With a talented creative team working on the show it's work in progress debut during the 2010 Feast Festival will be one not to miss.

Nelly has been socially isolated for years...fifty eight years to be exact. Largely kept within the four walls of her home, Nelly now finds herself an independent woman after the recent death of her over-protective Pa. 'Blind Nelly' is a provocative new work in progress 'teaser' with forum inspired by the extraordinary life of a local congenitally blind woman.
What does gender, love, relationship and sex look like without visual cues? How does one 'come of age' at fifty eight?
Come on a quirky, tragic and hilarious journey into where Nelly's world and
reality collide, compliment and permeate each other.

Written and conceived by Michele Fairbairn. Directed by Daisy Brown.
Original Compositions and Soundscapes by Heather Frahn. Moving/Still images by Maura O'Regan and Jason Hawkes. Starring Sandy Gore (Uncle Vanya Sydney Theatre Company; Taming of the Shrew Bell Shakespeare Company; Travelling North; Wit; ABC miniseries Brides of Christ and Baz Luhrmann's Australia).

The work in progress showing is on Sunday Nov 14th, 8:30pm
@ The Lounge Space in the Feast Festival Hub
Light Square, Adelaide
Tix only $10

MUSIC FOR ADELAIDE FRINGE PARADE

Since January myself and fellow musician from The Percussion House Marie-Therese have been working on the musical elements to the parade. The Adelaide Fringe Parade is the largest event in the Fringe and one of the biggest street events in Australia drawing tens of thousands of people to the opening night.

The Parade was attended by 80,000 people on Friday 19th of February, which saw our creations out there for everyone to see and hear! We worked with the Design & Construction team, creating a flamboyant soundscape of crazy ‘found object instruments' - and worked with various community groups to facilitate the floats in a rhythmical, melodic or simply random fashion.

See what we made below!

ROCKIN' THE BOAT - A SELL OUT SHOW!

Heather recently put on a different hat as percussionist/drummer in the Port Festival sell out show Rockin' The Boat! Heather also came out front and sang a version of 'The Ship Song' by Nick Cave which received a standing ovation!

Rockin' the Boat presented an eclectic night of songs and stories celebrating the independent spirit of ports around the world. The show featured a star line up of performers including Eileen Darley, Heather Frahn, Rosalind Aylmore, Peter Douglas and Lou Bennett. The show was produced by Emma Webb, directed by Katherine Fitzgerald with beautiful poetry performed by actor Stephen Sheehan.

(click on photos to see larger version)

The audience was taken on a journey and you could've heard a pin drop as the full band with of SA's finest musicians and glorious harmony backing from the Born On Monday choir captured the hearts of many! From Brecht to Guys and Dolls, Nick Cave to Kate Bush, Joni Mitchell to John Lennon, Rockin' The Boat went on a musical voyage with the docksiders, seafarers, working girls, dreamers and rebels of the Port.

The performance was such a success there is hint that Rockin' The Boat will make another appearance later in 2010... stay tuned!

HEATHER TEACHES SONGWRITERS RETREAT IN THE RED CENTRE!

Ross River Homestead Songwriters Retreat

The second Music NT/APRA Songwriters Retreat was held October 23-25 at Ross River Homestead near Alice Springs and was facilitated by singer-songwriter Heather Frahn. It proved another great success for all involved!!

Twelve Alice-region musicians attended with 15 songs written and recorded over the three-day Retreat. Coordinated by Music NT's Rory Davis, he said it was "excellent in fostering the skills and intent for artists to produce high-quality material". The picturesque and tranquil environment was devoid of the usual distractions, and as a result, perfect for musicians to do what they do best: write songs. Without such opportunities, Rory adds "the music industry would be without its core product". Alice-based artist Rhubee Neale proclaimed the Retreat "AWESOME!!" and "inspiring". Media interest was keen pre- and post-Retreat, with Rhubee and Rory both appearing on ABC Local Radio NT, to talk about their experiences. Funding is being sought for further Retreats next year.

Read the full report (opens in a new window).

Congratulations to everyone involved and look out for future performances of songs written at Ross River!

BELGIUM TOUR A GREAT SUCCESS!

After two sold out tour fundraiser shows in Adelaide, Heather departed Adelaide's shores for her 2nd solo tour internationally in Belgium, Europe.
Heather joined Flemish singer songwritier Neeka www.neekamusic.be for 8 concerts accross Flanders, performing on the very sought after stages of the Cultural Center circuit in Belgium.
Heather and Neeka played songs together at the end of the concerts as well as performing solo... with audiences loving the sounds!
The Belgium tour was a tremendous success for Heather as she received encores and high praise from the audiences and venue directors alike! It is highly likely that Heather will tour again in belgium within the next 2 years... so stay tuned!

Heather also had the opportunity to teach a workshop in Belgium in acapella singing and also an introduction to sound healing with the human voice. The workshop went so well that it went WAY overtime because people didn't want to go home! Heather will be teaching more workshops in the coming months. Join the mailing list to receive updates on when and where Heather's workshops will happen.

Heather then went on to study with two mentors in the UK.
Michael Ormiston, a fantastic artist and sound healer who sings the traditional Khoomii Mongolian harmonic singing. He also is a multi instrumentalist who plays gongs, tibetan singing bowls and many Mongolian string instruments. www.soundtransformations.btinternet.co.uk
Shirlie Roden, author, composer, vocalist who has a career spanning back to the 60's. She works with the human voice and how it can be used for physical, emotional and spiritual healing. www.shirlieroden.com
